Rebecca: Teacher, Traveler, Literacy Builder
My journey into literacy education is fueled by a commitment to curiosity and effective learning. I graduated from The College of Charleston (B.A. in English Literature) and Clemson University (Post-Baccalaureate in English Secondary Education).
My three years as a 8th grade Honors and English Language Arts teacher laid the groundwork for my deep curiosity about how students learn to read and what challenges them. This experience allowed me to co-direct a reading intervention camp and tutor high school students in writing—work that reinforced my belief that literacy and learning should feel natural and fun. After extensive global travel and intercultural work in Asia, my family and I returned to the USA. This period of personal exploration and educational goal-setting confirmed my dedication to teaching where the need is greatest and the potential for impact is highest: helping every student stretch the limits of their literacy. This means making a committed effort to both intervene and challenge across the entire range of student ability.
Driven by an insatiable curiosity, I love to meet new people and spend my free time reading, cooking new foods, and exploring the outdoors with my husband. We are often found living part-time aboard our sailboat, always embracing new opportunities for knowledge and connection.
